Junior League of Austin

So now that I am old 25 I am eligible to be a part of The Junior League of Austin. My perception is that its a grown up sorority that is dedicated to serving Austin by volunteering and fundraising. It seems like a really great fit for my community service void I have been looking to fill since I got back to Austin. We had to fill out an application and write a half page summary on why we want to be a part of "The League" based on their mission statement.

Mission Statement: The Junior League of Austin is an organization of women committed to promoting voluntarism, developing the potential of women and improving the community though the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers. Its purpose is exclusively educational and charitable.

So here's what I said:
Moving from east Texas in 2004 fresh out of high school, I planned on making Austin nothing more than my college town. I loved the Longhorns and the rest was just details. After my four years at The University of Texas I felt like I should flow with the social current and float to another city to start my professional career.
I found myself in Houston, which is what I now call my “Nemo- phase.” I had abandoned my safe little “anemone” and all of my friends in search of validation that I could be self sufficient. In most situations that year I would have more likely been cast as the naïve optimist Dory than the curious and determined Nemo but I survived nonetheless. The time I had in Houston showed me three important things about myself: I have a passion for serving people, compassion is underrated, and I LOVE Austin, Texas.
Being gone from Austin allowed me to appreciate what this community is about in a different capacity than I think would have been possible any other way. This city has a hearbeat that is recognized beyond its city limits, which I believe is attributed to the sincere humanity of those who proudly call themselves “Austinites.” That being said, I want to be accountable for contributing to the betterment of our growing city and I feel like The Junior League of Austin gives me that opportunity.
As I have learned more about “The League” I feel excited to potentially be part of this group of women who are diverse yet passionate about one common goal: positive change. I look forward to surrounding myself with people who are motivated by and engaged in one another. I sincerely believe that love and kindess beget love and kindess and I feel encouraged to have found a group where that mantra is of value. Its important to me that I stay consistently motivated to do something greater than myself, something that helps someone else to be happy or to possibly suffer less. I think that The Junior League of Austin is a perfect fit for this challenge and I am eager for an opportunity to breathe life into a city that has changed mine.

Fingers crossed they lemme in. Trying to go all Boy Scouts on Austin and leave it better than I found it!
